3 Detained After Attempt to Shut Meat Shop
Three people were detained after a group of Hindu activists allegedly tried to force shut a meat shop in a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district, police said Tuesday.
The incident occurred in Khampur village of Chapar area on Monday evening. Police rushed to the spot and dispersed the two sides, an officer said.
Three people were taken into custody and later released, the officer added.

91 Kanpur Tanneries ‘Polluting’ Ganga Closed
Kanpur authorities have ordered the “immediate shutdown” of 91 leather tanneries in the city that were offloading their waste in the Ganga river, causing widespread water pollution, an official said on Tuesday.
The crackdown comes days before the start of the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj from January 14.
Rupee Softens Against US Dollar in Opening Trade
The rupee weakened by 36 paise to 70.04 against the US dollar in opening trade Tuesday on rising crude prices and some demand for the American currency from importers.
The rupee opened weak at 69.83 at the interbank forex market against its previous close of 69.68 per dollar.
It moved in range of 70.06 per dollar to 69.83 per dollar in early trade and was trading at 70.04, showing a fall of 36 paise against the greenback.
Unrelenting Cold Wave Continues in Kashmir Valley
An unrelenting cold wave continued in the Kashmir Valley on Tuesday as the weather office said the weather condition would remain the same during the next 48 hours.
All rivers, lakes, streams and springs in the valley remain partially frozen as chilly winds blew from snow clad mountains into the plains.

US President Donald Trump will “address the nation” on Tuesday over the ongoing “humanitarian and national security crisis” on the country’s southern border, two days before his scheduled trip to the region.
Trump made the announcement in a tweet late Monday night, reports CNN.
“I am pleased to inform you that I will address the nation on the humanitarian and national security crisis on our southern border. Tuesday night at 9 p.m.,” the President tweeted.

World Bank President Jim Yong Kim Resigns
World Bank President Jim Yong Kim has abruptly resigned from his post to join a private infrastructure investment firm, an unexpected departure that comes nearly three years before the end of his term.
Kim, who had served in the role since 2012, announced on Monday that he would leave his post well ahead of his term’s expiration at the end of 2021, reports CNN.
“It has been a great honour to serve as President of this remarkable institution, full of passionate individuals dedicated to the mission of ending extreme poverty in our lifetime,” Kim wrote in a statement.
Uber Driver Pleads Guilty to Killing 6 in US Shooting Spree
An Uber driver who went on a shooting spree that killed six people in the Midwestern US state of Michigan pleaded guilty to all charges Monday.
In a surprise turn as the trial was scheduled to begin, Jason Dalton pleaded guilty to embarking on a deadly February 2016 shooting spree in the small city of Kalamazoo, in between driving for customers of the ride-sharing service Uber.
Dalton was charged with six counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder and eight firearms charges. He faces a mandatory life sentence without parole.
7 Dead in Shooting in Mexican City of Playa Del Carmen
Seven men have been killed in a shooting attack at a bar in Mexico’s Caribbean coastal city of Playa del Carmen, authorities said Monday.
State and local police said the attack occurred late Sunday at the “Las Virginias” bar in a low-income section relatively far from the beachside tourist resort zone. Six men were found shot to death in the bar, and another died at a local hospital.
One man was wounded but survived the attack. He told police he was drinking beer with friends when gunshots broke out. The attackers have not yet been identified.
North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un’s Train Arrives in Beijing
A three-car train of the type used by North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has arrived in Beijing following the announcement of four-day visit to China.
The train pulled into Beijing’s North Station along tracks lined by police and paramilitary troops. It’s wasn’t immediately clear whether Kim was on the train, although his arrival Tuesday had been openly announced by both sides.
Upon arrival, Kim will be driven by motorcade to the Diaoyutai State Guest House in western Beijing, according to precedent set by Kim’s two previous visits as leader to the capital.
North Korea Confirms Kim’s Departure to China for Summit
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has left for China for a four-day trip, the North’s state media reported Tuesday, amid speculation that he may attempt to coordinate his positions with Beijing ahead of his likely summit with President Donald Trump.
The Korean Central News Agency said that Kim departed for China on Monday afternoon with his wife Ri Sol Ju and top officials. It said Kim is visiting China at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
