Hubli: Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Goolihatti Shekar of Hosadurga constituency on Sunday attempted to kill himself as a mark of protest against the alleged harassment of his supporters by the police. According to reports, he attempted self-immolation after a verbal spat with the police over booking his followers in illegal sand business cases.
Shekhar tried to set himself ablaze in front of Hosadurga Police Station, following which he was shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. He is currently said to be out of danger.
The BJP lawmaker alleged that the police had filed cases against his followers despite them being innocent. A report by The New Indian Express said that Shekhar and the police have had frequent tussles after he was elected from the constituency.
Hosadurga has been the centre of sand mining in the district and reportedly, many illegal miners operate in the constituency.
