Thane Cops Arrest 2 From Maharashtra’s Amravati, Seize 10 Pistols

Two persons were arrested with 10 pistols and 40 live cartridges from Amravati district, about 650 kilometres from Thane, by Thane Police’s Crime Branch, a senior official said on Monday, 31 December.

The arrests were in connection with an Arms Act case registered in May this year in Shil Daigar police station, Thane police commissioner Vivek Phansalkar said.

4 J&K Policemen Sacked After Their Weapons Go Missing

Four policemen deployed as guards with a Congress legislator in Jammu and Kashmir, from whose residence four weapons went missing on Sunday, were dismissed from service on Monday, 31 December.

A police spokesman said: “Four personal security guards (PSOs) deployed with (Congress legislator) Muhammad Muzaffar Parray have been dismissed from service for dereliction of duty and unauthorised absence.”

Entire Nagaland Declared ‘Disturbed’ for 6 More Months Under AFSPA

The entire state of Nagaland has been declared a “disturbed area” for six more months, till June-end, under the controversial AFSPA, which empowers security forces to conduct operations anywhere and arrest anyone without any prior notice.

In a notification, the home ministry said the central government is of the opinion that the area comprising the whole of state of Nagaland is in such a disturbed and dangerous condition that the use of armed forces in aid of civilian power is necessary.

5 Detained as NIA Conducts Fresh Searches in Delhi

Five people were detained after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) carried out searches at several places in Delhi and questioned a few people in connection with its probe into the alleged Islamic State module of Harkat-ul-Harb-e-Islam, officials quote by News18 said.

Lion Escapes US Zoo, Kills Worker

A 22-year-old graduate, who started a job at a wildlife conservatory in the US state of North Carolina two weeks ago, was mauled to death by a lion that escaped a locked enclosure at the facility.

The Conservators Centre in Burlington said in a statement that the worker was killed during a routine enclosure cleaning on Sunday, 30 December, CNN reported. The lion was shot and killed to allow efforts to retrieve the victim.

Two of the convicts in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, Mahender Yadav and Kishan Khokhar, surrendered before Delhi’s Karkardooma Court on Monday, 31 December.

The court accepted their surrender application. One of the convicts, Yadav, was allowed a walking stick and spectacles by the court

3 Killed, 79 Missing After Gas Explosion in Russia

At least three people were killed and another 79 people were unaccounted for after a gas explosion rocked a residential building in Russia’s Urals city of Magnitogorsk on Monday, 31 December, a senior official said.

“Three people have been pulled alive from the rubble and three are dead,” Oleg Klimov, deputy governor of the Chelyabinsk region where the industrial city is located, was quoted as saying by state news agency RIA Novosti.

“The fate of 79 people is unclear,” he said, adding police were working to locate their whereabouts.

Trump Slowing Down Troop Pullout From Syria: US Senator

President Donald Trump has ordered a slowdown to the withdrawal of US forces in Syria, Republican Sen Lindsey Graham has said.

“I think we’re in a pause situation,” the South Carolina Republican said on Sunday, 30 December, outside the White House after lunch with the president.

Trump announced earlier this month that he was ordering the withdrawal of all the roughly 2,000 troops from war-torn Syria, with aides expecting it to take place swiftly.

2 Dead, 1 Injured in Long Island House Fire

US authorities said on Monday, 31 December, that a 68-year-old woman and her four-year-old granddaughter have died following a house fire on Long Island.

WABC-TV reports that both victims succumbed to their injuries on Sunday after being found unconscious inside the burning home. They were carried out by firefighters.

The rupee appreciated 20 paise to 69.75 against the US currency in opening trade on Monday, 31 December, amid weakening of the American unit and positive opening in the domestic equity market.

Ex-Nissan Boss Ghosn’s Detention Extended to 11 January

Former Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn will be spending the beginning of 2019 behind bars after a Tokyo court on Monday, 31 December, extended his detention through to 11 January, local media reported.

The decision, reported by public broadcaster NHK and local news agency Jiji Press, comes after Japanese prosecutors re-arrested Ghosn for fresh allegations on 21 December, dashing his hopes of being home for Christmas.

Indian Army Foils Major BAT Attack Along LoC in Naugam

The Indian Army on Sunday, 30 December, foiled a major BAT (Border Action Team) attempt to strike a forward post along LoC in Naugam Sector.

The intruders attempted to move by exploiting thick jungles close to the LoC and were assisted by heavy cover fire of high-caliber weapons from Pakistani posts.

“We will ask Pakistan to take back the mortal remains of deceased (likely) Pakistani soldiers, since Pakistan did provide full covering fire support to these intruders,” Indian Army said.

Will Prefer to Contest Assembly By-Election From Sausar: Kamal Nath

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath said Sunday that he would prefer to get elected to the state Legislative Assembly from Sausar in Chhindwara district.

Nath is currently the Lok Sabha member from Chhindwara. After being sworn in as chief minister following last month’s Assembly elections, he needs to get elected to the Assembly within six months.

“I would prefer to contest election from Sausar after discussing with local people as I am the voter from that constituency,” Nath told reporters.
