West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sat on her ‘Save the Constitution’ dharna at Kolkata’s Metro Channel late on Sunday, 3 February, along with Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar as the state plunged into an unprecedented crisis.
This came after a CBI team came to the Kolkata police chief’s residence to question him in connection with ponzi scam cases, but was detained by the state police. The team was later released.
Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Omar Abdullah, Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, Chandrababu Naidu, Mayawati, Sharad Pawar, and Arvind Kejriwal, spoke to Mamata Banerjee over the phone and expressed solidarity.
“BJP is torturing Bengal,” Banerjee asserted at a press conference she backed police chief Rajeev Kumar, calling him “the best in the world”.
